XIAO WANG, EMILY, Choral Conductor, Soprano
Born in China, Emily Xiao Wang completed a Bachelor of Music from Shanghai Normal University. Now resident in Melbourne, Australia, Emily has a post-graduate degree in Opera Performance from the Victorian College of Arts. She has been the recipient of the Mabel Kent Estate Singing Scholarship and Harold Fisher Opera Scholarship, a finalist in the Australian Singing Competition Opera Award in 2005 and a semi-finalist in the German Australian Opera Grant in 2006.
Emily completed her operatic studies with a Graduate Diploma in Opera Performance
from the Victorian College of the Arts in 2002, along the way receiving the Mabel Kent Singing Scholarship and the Harold Fisher Opera Scholarship. She has performed with Melbourne City Opera Orchestra, the Melbourne University Orchestra, Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Orchestra, Australian Philharmonic Orchestra, Australian Pops Orchestra, Melbourne Mandolin Orchestra, orchestras and opera companies overseas.
Since graduating from the Victorian College of Arts, Emily Xiao Wang has gained considerable experience both on the operatic and concert stages. During 2003 she appeared in the role of Nedda in I Pagliacci for Melbourne City Opera. In 2004 she performed Opera in the Park with More Than Opera and in Mozart Please with the Salon Rouge Orchestra. During 2005 Emily Xiao Wang’s appearances included the role of Servilia in Mozart’s La Ciemenza Di Tito for the VCA Opera Studio, staged concerts with More Than Opera at Geelong Performing Arts Centre and the Benalla Performing Arts Centre and Rigoletto: A Staged Opera Concert with the Salon Rouge Orchestra. She was engaged as soprano soloist for performances of the Faure Requiem with the Melbourne Philharmonic Orchestra at Castlemaine State Festival and also for Sparkling Keys with the Team of Pianists in concerts for the National Trust. In 2006 she performed with internationally renowned pianist, A. Kogosowski, in concerts broadcast on 3MBS FM from Raheen.
Her appearances during 2007 included being soloist at the Organs of the Ballarat Goldfields Festival, concerts with the Melbourne Mandolin Orchestra as part of the Melbourne Italian Festival, further appearances as soloist with the Team of Pianists and soloist in Mozart arias with the Zelman Orchestra.
During 2008 Emily Xiao Wang’s appearances have included an invitation to return to the Organs of the Ballarat Goldfields Festival, and her debut with Melbourne Opera in the role of Countess in its Melbourne performances of Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro, involvement in a CD recording for More Than Opera, and five concerts, under the auspices of the Australian Pops Orchestra in Geelong and in the BMW Edge, and its Absolutely British concerts in the Melbourne Town Hall and Sydney Opera House.
In 2010, Emily first appeared in the music theatre The King and I as Tuptim, a production by The Production Company, which was on show at the State Theatre in Melbourne from 14 to 25 July.
In 2012, Emily appeared as Fiordiligi in Mozart’s great comic masterpiece Cosi Fan Tutte, a production by Melbourne Opera during July and August. She appeared as soloist for Melbourne Opera in its Mozart By Moonlight concerts in Melbourne’s Royal Botanical Gardens.
In 2014, Emily took up the role as Cio Cio San in Puccini’s Madame Butterfly with Melbourne Opera.
Most recently, Emily performed at a series of China Tour Concerts with Melbourne Opera in Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Wuhan, Suzhou, Xi’an and other cities.
