ST FRANCIS YOUTH CHOIR

St Francis Youth Choir was formed in 2000 to sing for the first Sunday of the month Tertiary Students’ Mass at St Francis’ Church, Lonsdale Street; Victoria’s oldest Catholic church, and Australia’s busiest, with no less than 38 Masses held every week. Over the years the choirs’ identity and level of performance has evolved and developed into a vibrant and adventurous musical entity. Our goal is to perform a diverse spectrum of both liturgical and concert music, traditional and contemporary, which is always accessible and enjoyable, including important examples of traditional church music and hymns. Performance repertoire has included Chilcott A Little Jazz Mass, Buc Mary MacKillop Mass, Jenkins The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace, Tin Baba Yetu & Kia Hora, masses and pieces by Christopher Willcock, in addition to traditional church motets and masses. The choir has been called on to sing at significant events in the life of St Francis’ such as Sunday 11.00am [High] Masses, ordinations, and combined orchestral masses with St Francis’ Choir. The Youth Choir has appeared at weddings, concerts and in competitions. On 26 August 2018 the choir was awarded the Young Choral Prize (1st place) at Royal South Street Eisteddfod in Ballarat, with the adjudicator commenting “A really attractive sound, musicianship. A real pleasure, thank you!”. During December of this year the choir will sing for Mass at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Bendigo. Tonight is our first performance at the Town Hall, and the first time working with Andrew Wailes, which represents another important milestone in the life of our choir.
