DAVID SOUTH, accordion player, expert in Scottish Dance Music

Accordionist David South was born in Brisbane, but has been a resident of Victoria since the mid-1990s.  David grew up in a Scottish Country Dancing family and has had connections with the Scottish community in Australia for all of his life.  He gave his first public performance playing Scottish Country Dance music on the piano before the age of 10 and took up the accordion not long after.

David has lead a regular band specialising in Scottish Dance Music for more than three decades and has developed a skill and knowledge recognised worldwide.  His music has taken him to places such as New Zealand, Malaysia and Scotland, as well as the length and breadth of Australia.  David has been to Scotland three times and has performed with bands such as Nicol McLaren’s, Colin Dewar’s and Iain MacPhail’s.  Three of the many highlights from his trips are his visit to Shetland, where he was able to session with many legends of the Scottish Dance Band scene, meeting one of his childhood musical heroes – Jimmy Shand Jnr., and being interviewed by the legendary Robbie Shepherd on BBC Radio Scotland.  David also composes and his tunes, along with some by his friends & musical colleagues, are available for free download from his website, www.dalsegnomusic.com .
